The Will of the People tour is here! And they’re starting out their main UK leg at the home of Huddersfield Town Football Club!
The Warning and Brighton’s Royal Blood have been following the band throughout Europe and South America prior to the show with many successful performances and great atmospheres varying from country to country.
The first three songs consisted of the new album’s title track of the same name, Interlude, and the bass heavy Hysteria starting with Chris Wolstenholme in the spotlight at the end of the runway.
Matt running back and forth from his idle position up on stage all the way down the runway which split up the stadium’s ground floor. The lights go dark, and a strange figure appears on the big screen, “If you do not do what you're told to do when you're told to do it, you will be punished.” Erupts around the ground, “I am in control mother fucker, do you understand?” Straight into Psycho which causes the audience to bounce up and down during every chorus.
Classic songs like Bliss and Resistance are then played next which are promptly followed by three new tracks, Won’t Stand Down: the lead single of the new album, an audio snippet of Kill or Be Killed, and the synth-heavy Compliance. One of my personal favourites from Muse’s discography as well as the first full album I ever listened to by them was Thought Contagion from their 2018 record Simulation Theory. The stage was flooded with green and purple lights to reference their 80s styled music video.
The set consisted of the usual Muse bangers like Plug In Baby, Uprising and Supermassive Black Hole all making an appearance through this incredible set. The band never let the audience rest for a second with water cups being handed out to the people near the barrier by security, it was an incredibly hot day.
Behold the Glove introduced the huge new stage piece which included flames, strobes and a rotating inflatable figure which mimics the hooded rebel on the album cover of Will of the People.
This is my second time seeing the band and both times their stage design and costumes have been immaculate. Muse are very good at creating a strong sense of unity at their shows, an atmosphere which is rare to be seen at shows nowadays.
The encore consisted of the Simulation Theory theme, the full variation of Kill or Be Killed and Knights of Cydonia with Chris performing a ‘Man With a Harmonica’ intro which is a staple of any Muse show. The harmonica is promptly thrown into the crowd and Chris is seen sprinting up the runway back to his original position. It makes you think how many harmonicas are purchased before a Muse tour!
