Walking around in a city like Leeds when Liam Gallagher is in town is not something some can stomach, seeing grown men in parkas and bucket hats really makes you ponder.
Liam Gallagher and John Squire released their collaborative debut album, creatively called - Liam Gallagher and John Squire, which can only be described by superfans as “a reincarnation of The Beatles”.
Being the only material the duo have ever made together, it is all they played. Tracks that don’t really contain much substance at face value or even creative depth and experimentation, still managed to create a ruckus at the Leeds O2. The venue seemingly overfilled with dads drinking Dark Fruits and San Miguel, the stench of outdoor smoke flooding through the cracks of the doors and wasted beer flying through the sky onto an unsuspecting victim, the energy was almost that of a music festival crammed into a confined space.
I was never truly a fan of The Stone Roses, mainly due to Ian Brown, John Squire put in a quiet but noticeable shift on lead guitar which lead the tracks through nicely and if not for a bit too long. Liam was weirdly timid this gig.
After playing through the album in its entirety, John and Liam left the stage. Dark red lights flooded the stage and smoke seeped from the smoke machines either side of the stage. Liam and John have returned, oh joy - thankfully for just one more song.
Never thought I’d see the day Liam Gallagher and John Squire would create an album together, tour said album, and end the show on a cover of ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ by The Rolling Stones, never.
I had great company this evening in my very good friend Nick, who was a huge fan of the collaboration and had a great time drinking whilst I had to remain sober to drive home. £80 for a performance from Liam and John performing 10 original songs and 1 cover is a bit steep and is quite embarrassing that people have still pulled together and sold the entire tour out, impressive really!
If you’re a fan of Oasis and Liam Gallagher, then great, this show would’ve been for you. I think the songs and this collaboration serve a purpose, but it just doesn’t fulfil mine.
